
Broglie’s work caught Schrödinger’s eye and inspired Schrödinger to work on explaining how an electron would move as a wave in an atom. In 1925, Schrödinger found the 1924 thesis of physicist Louis de Broglie where Broglie had proposed a theory of wave mechanics. Some of his most fruitful years as a theoretical physicist were spent as the University of Zurich. In 1921, he became the assistant to Max Wien at the University of Zurich, where he stayed for six years. Before settling in Zurich in 1921, he jumped from one teaching post to another at the University of Stuttgart, the University of Jena, and the University of Breslau. In 1920, Schrödinger married Annemarie Bertel. In 1914, Schrödinger was drafted into World War I and served with the Austro-Hungarian military. Afterwards, he worked as a research assistant at his alma mater’s Second Physics Institute. in physics from the University of Vienna in 1910. There he met Fritz Hasenöhrl who would be one of his greatest influences and mentors. Beginning in 1906, he studied at the University of Vienna, where he majored in physics. He then went on to attend Vienna’s Akademisches Gymnasium, where he developed an interest for various fields, such as science, grammar, and German poetry.
Schrödinger was homeschooled by private teachers until he was 11 years old. Later on in his adult life, Erwin Schrödinger identified as an atheist. He was raised as a Lutheran as his father was a Lutheran. He was the only child of Rudolf Schrödinger, a botanist and oil cloth producer, and Georgine Emilia Brenda Bauer, daughter of Rudolf’s professor in chemistry.
